The US Federal Trade Commission’s Green Guides treat an unqualified degradable claim as requiring the entire item to break down and return to nature within roughly one year after customary disposal. Most cartons go to landfill, where research found maximum carbon conversion for paper averaging around 26% and methane released over 5 to 40 years. “Compostable” is the defensible claim, because it has measurable thresholds: ASTM D6400 requires at least 90% organic carbon degradation and 90% of dry weight passing a 2.0 mm sieve within 84 days.

In This Guide

What does biodegradable actually mean?

Is it a legal claim?

Do pulp cartons qualify?

Biodegradable or compostable?

How long does it take?

Which materials break down

What your label should say

How to specify and verify

Key Takeaways

“Biodegradable” has no threshold behind it. “Compostable” has two: 90% organic carbon degradation and 90% of dry weight through a 2.0 mm sieve in 84 days under ASTM D6400.

The FTC Green Guides advise against unqualified degradable claims for items headed to landfill, incineration or recycling, because they will not break down within about a year there.

Plain uncoated pulp cartons qualify on the chemistry. A wax, plastic or heavy ink layer can disqualify them.

Certification proves the product can compost. It does not prove a facility near your customer accepts it, and most do not.

For a clean carton, recycling through the paper stream is a better real world outcome than any biodegradation claim.

What Does Biodegradable Actually Mean?

Biodegradation is the process of microorganisms consuming a material and converting its carbon into carbon dioxide, methane, water and microbial biomass. It is a measured outcome, not a property a material simply has. The critical detail buyers miss is that biodegradation always depends on conditions. The same carton behaves completely differently in a compost pile, in soil and in a sealed landfill.

Compare it with decomposition, which people use interchangeably and which means something looser. A carton torn apart by rain and wind has decomposed. The pieces are smaller. Nothing living consumed them and the carbon never rejoined the natural cycle.

That gap between the two words is where most marketing goes wrong. A supplier says “biodegradable” meaning “it is made of paper, so it will rot eventually.” A regulator reads it as a specific performance claim. Those are not the same statement.

Is Biodegradable a Legal Claim?

Yes, and it is stricter than most sellers expect. The FTC’s Green Guides treat an unqualified “degradable” or “biodegradable” claim as a representation that the entire product will completely break down and return to nature within roughly one year after customary disposal. Because items sent to landfills, incinerators or recycling facilities will not do that, the Guides advise against making unqualified biodegradable claims for them.

Read that carefully, because the operative phrase is “customary disposal.” The test is not whether the carton could biodegrade in ideal conditions. It is where your cartons actually end up.

What this means in practice for biodegradable egg packaging:

If your cartons mostly go to kerbside recycling or landfill, an unqualified “biodegradable” label is the weakest ground you can stand on.

A qualified claim is defensible. “Compostable in industrial facilities where available” states a condition and names it.

A certification mark is stronger still, because a third party has tested against a published threshold.

This is general information rather than legal advice, and claim language should be reviewed by someone qualified before it goes on a pack.

Do Pulp Egg Cartons Qualify?

On chemistry, yes. A plain molded pulp carton is cellulose fiber and water with no adhesive, no resin and no plastic lining. The fibers interlock mechanically as the part dries, which is why there is nothing in it that microbes cannot process. It is close to the simplest case in packaging.

Three things can disqualify an otherwise qualifying carton.

Coatings. A wax or plastic barrier layer can push a carton out of both the composting and recycling streams. Egg cartons rarely need grease resistance, which is why most never carry one, and that is a genuine advantage as PFAS restrictions tighten on coated fiber food packaging.

Heavy inking. Dense ink coverage interferes with bacterial adhesion to the fiber surface. Bacteria that cannot attach cannot consume.

Additives. Pigment for colored pulp goes into the slurry rather than onto the surface, which is usually fine, but any additive needs checking against the standard you are certifying to.

Наш сайт яичные лотки из формованной целлюлозы are uncoated in plain formats, and our guide to Почему картонные коробки из целлюлозы — экологичный выбор covers the wider comparison.

Biodegradable or Compostable: Which Claim Can You Defend?

Compostable, without question. “Biodegradable” Home composting is a separate and slower specification: one widely used home compost scheme allows biodegradation at 20 to 30 °C over 365 days and disintegration within 26 weeks, which reflects how much colder a garden heap runs than an industrial facility.

Why this table is the whole argument. A buyer can verify a compostable claim. Nobody can verify a biodegradable one, because there is nothing to verify it against.

How Long Do Compostable Egg Cartons Take to Break Down?

In an active compost pile, weeks to a few months for a torn and dampened carton. In a sealed modern landfill, decades, and incompletely. That gap is the single most misleading thing about this topic, because the popular “a few weeks” figure describes only the first case.

Research on paper in landfill conditions found maximum carbon conversion averaging around 26%, with methane released gradually over roughly 5 to 40 years. Newspapers pulled from landfills after more than twenty years remain legible.

Four mechanisms explain it:

No oxygen. Anaerobic breakdown is dramatically slower than aerobic.

No moisture. Engineered landfills use liners and caps to keep water out, because leachate is a contamination risk. Microbes need water.

Lignin. The rigid polymer in plant cell walls resists anaerobic breakdown. Newsprint runs roughly 20 to 27% lignin.

Ink and chemistry. Heavy inking blocks bacterial adhesion, and sulfate deposits can suppress methane producing bacteria.

There is a counterintuitive upside. If a supplier offers an oxo-degradable egg carton, that is a reason to walk away.

What Should Your Label Actually Say?

Say what you can prove and name the condition. That single rule resolves almost every labelling question on this topic.

Strong, in descending order:

A certification mark with the scheme named, because a third party tested it against a published threshold.

“Compostable in industrial facilities, where available.” Qualified, conditional, accurate.

“Recyclable with paper.” For a plain carton this is the claim most customers can actually act on.

Weak or risky:

“Biodegradable,” unqualified. The FTC position above is the problem.

“Eco-friendly” or “green” with nothing behind them. Vague claims invite challenge and persuade nobody.

“100% compostable” without naming the condition or the standard.

Giving customers the correct egg carton disposal route is worth more than any adjective on the lid, because it is the only part of this they control.

The access problem nobody mentions on a pack. Certification says the carton can compost. It does not say a facility near your customer takes it. US municipal food waste collection reaches a minority of households, and relatively few programs accept molded fiber containers specifically. Selling a certified compostable pack into a market with no composting is a system mismatch, not a sustainability win.

Which is why, for a clean fiber carton, recycling is usually the better story. AF&PA reported US paper recovery at 61% to 65% and cardboard at 70% to 75% in 2025, with mills consuming 31.4 million tons of recovered paper. Nothing in the compostable category reaches that many households. Our article on the lifecycle of compostable egg cartons covers the disposal routes in practice.

How to Specify and Verify a Compostable Carton

If you are sourcing this quarter, these five steps are the difference between a claim you can defend and one you cannot.

This week: ask every supplier which standard their product is certified to, by name and number. “Biodegradable” as an answer is a red flag. ASTM D6400, D6868 or EN 13432 is an answer.

Then ask for the certificate itself, and check three things on it: that it is current, that it names your specific product rather than the company, and that it covers the format you are buying. Certification is usually granted per product.

Before you print: confirm the carton is uncoated, or that any coating is included in the certification. Confirm your ink coverage with the supplier if you are printing heavily.

Before you claim: map composting access in the markets you sell into, and have the label language reviewed by someone qualified.

Then decide what to say. For most sellers of plain cartons, leading with recyclable and adding compostable as a qualified secondary claim is both accurate and more useful to the customer.

На сайте BonitoPak we make uncoated формованная целлюлоза cartons from recovered paper, sugarcane bagasse and bamboo, with certification documentation available per product rather than as a blanket company claim. Compostable carries measurable thresholds, including 90% organic carbon degradation and 90% of dry weight through a 2.0 mm sieve within 84 days under ASTM D6400. Biodegradable carries none, which is why the FTC Green Guides advise against unqualified versions of it.

Q: Can I put an egg carton in my home compost? A: Plain uncoated pulp cartons compost at home if you tear them up and dampen them, though a garden heap runs far colder than an industrial facility. One widely used home compost specification allows 365 days for biodegradation and 26 weeks for disintegration, against 84 days industrially. Remove any label or plastic window first.

Q: Is biodegradable egg packaging recyclable too? A: Plain uncoated fiber is both, and recycling is the better route for a clean carton. AF&PA put US paper recovery at 61% to 65% in 2025, reaching far more households than composting does. A soiled or wet carton should go to compost or waste instead, because food contamination is a problem for paper mills.

Q: What is the correct egg carton disposal route? A: Clean and dry goes in paper recycling. Soiled, wet or broken goes to composting where accepted, or to general waste. Check your local program, because a recycling symbol on a pack is not a promise that your facility takes the item. Labels and plastic windows should be removed either way.

Q: Do plastic egg cartons biodegrade eventually? A: No. PET and polystyrene do not biodegrade in any meaningful timeframe, and no additive changes that in a way that meets ASTM D6400’s 90% organic carbon threshold or EN 13432’s equivalent. Oxo-degradable plastics fragment rather than biodegrade, producing microplastics, which is why several jurisdictions have restricted them. Recycling is the only realistic route for either material.

Q: How do I verify a supplier’s compostable claim? A: Ask for the certificate, not the marketing. Check that it is current, names your specific product rather than the company, and covers your format, since certification is normally granted per product. The standard should be named by number: ASTM D6400 or D6868 for BPI, EN 13432 for OK Compost.

Sources

US Federal Trade Commission, Green Guides, guidance on degradable and compostable claims. https://www.ftc.gov

ASTM D6400 pass criteria, including biodegradation, disintegration, heavy metals, ecotoxicity and volatile solids thresholds, as published in compostability testing references. https://www.astm.org

EN 13432 pass criteria, including biodegradation, disintegration and heavy metal limits, British Plastics Federation standards summary. https://www.bpf.co.uk/topics/Standards_for_compostability

Biodegradable Products Institute, certification requirements. https://bpiworld.org

American Forest and Paper Association, 2025 recovery figures. https://www.afandpa.org

Review of paper degradation in landfill conditions, International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation, on carbon conversion, methane timescales and lignin content.

By Leo Chan | Founder, BonitoPak | 20+ years in molded pulp manufacturing Last Updated: October 2026 Biodegradable egg cartons made from plain uncoated pulp do break down, but the word “biodegradable” on a label is a legal liability rather than a selling point.
