Como comparações de certificações apresentadas, home is the harder bar because the conditions are cooler and less controlled. BPI added its own home compostability layer in 2025, built on the French standard NF T 51-800, sitting on top of commercial certification rather than replacing it.

For a can carrier this matters because of where the pack actually ends up. Most consumers do not have access to industrial composting. If the realistic disposal route is a domestic bin or curbside recycling, an industrial certification is technically accurate and practically irrelevant to the person holding the pack.

The Numbers Behind the Marks

Industrial compostability standards test four things, with broadly consistent thresholds across ASTM and EN.

Biodegradation: at least 90 percent conversion of organic carbon to carbon dioxide within 180 days.

Disintegration: at least 90 percent of material passing a 2mm sieve after 84 days, roughly 12 weeks.

Ecotoxicity: no negative effect on plant growth in the resulting compost, assessed by plant emergence testing.

Heavy metals and composition: below specified thresholds, with restricted substances excluded.

There is also a newer development worth tracking. In-field testing standards assess how products perform in real composting operations rather than only in laboratory conditions, and field based programs run trials at actual facilities. This addresses a genuine gap, since some items that pass lab testing struggle in operations running shorter cycles or different temperatures.

PFAS Is Now Part of the Test

This is a recent and important change, and it connects directly to how fiber packaging used to be made.

Fluorochemicals were widely used to give fiber grease and oil resistance. They persist, they end up in finished compost, and certification programs now screen for them. BPI requires no intentionally added PFAS with a total fluorine threshold, and several states restrict PFAS in food packaging outright while requiring compostable products to be PFAS free and correctly labeled.

For a can carrier this should be straightforward. Cans are sealed, so the carrier faces water rather than oil, and grease resistance is not a functional requirement. Ask any supplier to confirm the absence of intentionally added fluorochemicals in writing, and request a laboratory report for fluorine content rather than accepting a general statement.

Certificates Are Narrower Than People Assume

The most common problem is not a fake certificate. It is a real certificate that does not cover the product being bought.

Certification applies to specific listed products, not to a supplier’s entire catalog.

The certificate covers the finished article including inks, adhesives and any coating, not just the base material.

Material thickness has to match the certified limit stated on the certificate.

Certifications expire and can be withdrawn, so a document from two years ago proves nothing about today.

There is also a jurisdiction trap. North American and European schemes are not mutually recognized. A certificate under one system does not satisfy the regulatory definitions of the other, so a producer selling into both markets generally needs both certifications rather than one plus an explanation.

O que vemos em nossa própria linha de produção

We form molded fiber packaging in Chashan Town, Dongguan, and certification questions usually arrive later in a project than they should.

Decide the claim before the coating

Water resistance and compostability route are the same decision. An uncoated part stays a fiber substrate. Add a barrier and the applicable standard changes along with the testing cost. We would rather have that conversation before geometry is finalized, because our linha de prensagem úmida e linha de prensagem a seco produce different wall sections and different surface characteristics, and both feed into what barrier is actually needed.

Pigment and print are in scope

Because certification covers the finished article, color is not outside the test. We run six pulp systems matched to better than 95 percent Pantone accuracy, and coloring the pulp spreads pigment thinly through the wall rather than concentrating dense ink on one face. That tends to sit more comfortably with a compostability claim, though the pigment itself still has to clear the certification. Options are set out on our embalagens de celulose moldadas personalizadas página.

Structure and claim are separate problems

A carrier holds its full loaded weight in tension from the rim, which is closer to our embalagens industriais e de proteção para celulose work than to a food tray. Wall section is specified from roughly 0.8 to 3mm against that load. Certification does not change the structural requirement, and thinning the wall to reduce material has to respect both. Sample molds run in about seven days and production molds around eight days after geometry approval, with minimums from 1,000 pieces.

A Verification Checklist

Six checks on can carrier certifications before a bulk order, in order.

Confirm the certification mark is from a recognized certifier rather than a self declared logo.

Check the licence or certificate number against the certifier’s public database.

Confirm the certificate covers your exact specification, including thickness, color and print.

Confirm which standard and which environment, industrial or home, the certification covers.

Request a fluorine laboratory report rather than a general PFAS free statement.

Check that the receiving programs in your markets actually accept the item.

Colocando isso em prática

Choose the claim you can defend rather than the one that sounds strongest. If your carrier is uncoated single material fiber, you likely have a route to both claims, but they need different evidence and they carry different risks.

For recyclability, qualify the wording and keep the pack to one material. For compostability, get the certification before printing anything, specify which environment it covers, and hold documentation that matches the exact product you are buying rather than the supplier’s range.

Em BonitoPak we treat the compostability route as part of the material specification rather than a later add on, because whether a part stays uncoated changes both the applicable standard and the testing path. Telling us which claim you intend to make at quote stage is more useful than asking whether the material is compostable in general.

Sobre o autor

Leo Chan is the founder of BonitoPak and has spent more than 20 years in molded pulp packaging, working with over 500 brands moving from plastic and foam to fiber based formats. BonitoPak manufactures molded pulp packaging at its facility in Chashan Town, Dongguan, Guangdong, running both wet pressing and dry pressing lines across six pulp systems, with in house mold design and tooling. The certification summary here reflects published standards and program requirements as of mid 2026 alongside production experience on that line. Standards and state rules change, and certification status should be confirmed with the certifier at the time of purchase. This is general information rather than legal advice.

Perguntas frequentes

Q: Can one carrier be both compostable and recyclable?

A: Yes, and uncoated fiber often is. The claims are verified differently though. Compostability needs certification of the finished part, while recyclability depends on whether local facilities accept and process the material.

Q: Does BPI certified cover everything a supplier makes?

A: No. Certification applies to specific listed products, not to a company’s whole range. Ask for the certificate matching your exact specification, including thickness, and check the certifier’s public database.

Q: Is OK compost certification for home better than industrial?

A: It is a harder standard to pass, since backyard piles run at ambient temperatures rather than the elevated heat of a managed facility. Whether it is better depends on where your packaging actually ends up.

Q: Why does PFAS come up in a compostability discussion?

A: Because fluorochemicals were used for grease resistance in fiber packaging and persist in finished compost. Certification programs now screen for them, and several states restrict them in food packaging outright.

Q: What if my carrier has printed ink on it?

A: Inks and adhesives fall within the scope of certification, so they have to be assessed alongside the fiber. A certificate covering an unprinted part does not automatically extend to a printed version.

By Leo Chan | Writer, BonitoPak | 20+ years in molded pulp packaging Published: 17 August 2026 | Last reviewed: 17 August 2026 Recyclable is an infrastructure question that depends on local collection and end markets.
