Fiber is pulped into a water slurry, and a forming mold is dipped into it under vacuum, drawing fiber onto the mold surface to create a wet preform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens next is the whole distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dry press: the preform is dried first, then the dried body is hot pressed to finish it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wet press: the preform goes straight into a heated secondary mold while still saturated, and is dried inside the mold under heat and pressure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In dry press the fibers dry in a loose state and are compressed afterwards, so they set before they are compacted. In wet press the fibers are compressed while still wet and mobile, which forces them to bond tightly and take the surface of the mold. That is why one produces a fuzzy, thick part and the other a dense, smooth one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dry-press-molded-pulp\"><strong>\u30c9\u30e9\u30a4\u30d7\u30ec\u30b9\u6210\u5f62\u30d1\u30eb\u30d7<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dry press molded pulp is formed, dried, then pressed. The dried body is pressed between molds to set final shape and improve one surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result has one relatively smooth face, the side that contacted the mold, and one rougher face. Walls are thicker, generally in the range of roughly 1.5 to 3mm, and the structure carries more bulk fiber. Because the part is thicker and less dense, it cushions well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dry press also handles complexity comfortably. Wet press parts run over 30 percent higher hardness than dry press, with thin walls, sharp corner radii and flat surfaces. The visible side is smooth and even, while the reverse often shows a subtle mesh pattern left by the forming screen, which is a reliable way to identify the process on a finished part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The finish is frequently compared to thermoformed plastic in precision, though the tactile quality is different: a warm matte surface rather than a cold synthetic one. The International Molded Fiber Association groups molded pulp into four types: thick wall, transfer molded, thermoformed and processed pulp, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fenix-ind.com\/2025\/06\/06\/molded-pulp-packaging-the-ultimate-guide-2025-edition\/\">set out in published industry guides<\/a>. Thick wall is the heaviest class, with academic sources placing it around 5 to 10mm and the mold contact side smoother than the reverse. Thermoformed corresponds to what most suppliers market as wet press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So wet press and dry press are commercial shorthand for a more granular technical taxonomy. When comparing quotations, ask which IMFA class a supplier means rather than relying on the marketing term, because two suppliers using the same words may be offering different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-material-follows-process\"><strong>Material Follows Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the part buyers most often miss, and it explains much of the price difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dry press is highly compatible with post consumer recycled content, which is widely available and inexpensive. Recycled fiber is coarser, which is fine because the process produces a textured part anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wet press typically runs sugarcane bagasse, which has finer fibers and fewer impurities, and that is what makes the high surface quality achievable. Bagasse costs more than recycled paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the process choice partly determines the fiber, and the fiber contributes to the unit cost alongside tooling. It also affects end of life claims, since feedstock and additives differ between systems. Forming is fast and hot pressing is slow, so a wet press line has to run as many cavities per press cycle as the mold plate allows to keep pace with forming. That produces large multi cavity molds rather than small ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, precision. Wet press molds are machined from high grade aluminum or stainless steel and must hold tight tolerances while withstanding sustained heat and pressure. A smooth surface on the part requires a smooth, accurate surface on the tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cycle time compounds it. Heat pressing typically runs somewhere in the region of two to four minutes per cycle, which caps throughput in a way dry press does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-size-changes-the-answer\"><strong>Size Changes the Answer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For large or heavy products the comparison inverts, and this is worth knowing before assuming the premium process is the better one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part size increases, wet press tooling becomes disproportionately complex and expensive, and thin wall structures become harder to control consistently across a large surface. It is not the cheaper compromise, it is the correct engineering choice for that class of part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-middle-option\"><strong>The Middle Option<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A semi wet process exists and is worth knowing about, because it sometimes resolves a stalled decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The preform is partially dried to remove much of the moisture, then hot pressed while still slightly damp. Because fibers are still mobile during pressing they bond better than in dry press, producing a surface smoother than dry press but not matching the finish of full wet press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commercially it sits between the two. Cheaper than wet press because the final pressing is shorter and throughput higher, more expensive than dry press because it still needs precision hot pressing equipment. Structurally it is stiffer than dry press with more cushioning than wet press. If a project needs better presentation than dry press allows without wet press economics, this is the conversation to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-we-see-on-our-own-production-line\"><strong>\u81ea\u793e\u306e\u751f\u7523\u30e9\u30a4\u30f3\u3067\u76ee\u306b\u3059\u308b\u5149\u666f<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We run both processes at our facility in Chashan Town, Dongguan, which is less common than it sounds and is why we are asked to compare them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-our-actual-specifications\"><strong>Our actual specifications<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u79c1\u305f\u3061\u306e <a href=\"https:\/\/bonitopak.com\/ja\/%e6%b9%bf%e5%bc%8f%e5%9c%a7%e6%90%be%e6%88%90%e5%bd%a2%e3%83%91%e3%83%ab%e3%83%97%e3%82%a8%e3%83%83%e3%82%b0%e3%82%ab%e3%83%bc%e3%83%88%e3%83%b3\/\">wet pressed parts<\/a> finish at a wall thickness of roughly 0.7 to 1.2mm with a dense, smooth face that holds emboss detail and renders color cleanly. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/bonitopak.com\/ja\/%e8%a3%bd%e5%93%81\/%e3%83%89%e3%83%a9%e3%82%a4%e3%83%97%e3%83%ac%e3%82%b9%e6%88%90%e5%bd%a2%e3%83%91%e3%83%ab%e3%83%97%e3%83%88%e3%83%ac%e3%82%a4\/\">dry pressed parts<\/a> finish at roughly 2.5 to 3.0mm, compacted for rigidity, crisp geometry and consistent tolerances. Across both we specify from about 0.8 to 3mm depending on the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-question-we-ask-before-recommending-either\"><strong>The question we ask before recommending either<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Will a customer look at this pack, and does the product need cushioning? If the pack is customer facing and the contents are light, wet press. If the pack is protecting something heavy in transit and nobody sees it, dry press. If both are true, that is where the specification gets interesting and where the semi wet option or a two part solution usually emerges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-process-is-a-capital-decision-not-a-setting\"><strong>Process is a capital decision, not a setting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Buyers sometimes ask whether a supplier can switch a job from one process to the other. They cannot, because these are separate lines with different equipment. A supplier offering only one will recommend it for everything, which is worth knowing when reading advice. Wet press is marketed as premium and dry press as economical, and that framing misleads people into treating one as better. They solve different problems, and on a large protective part dry press is the superior answer at any budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When comparing quotations, confirm which process and which wall thickness each supplier is quoting, and ask whether they run both.
